Overview

The WhatsApp Direct Add-on for CleverTap Essentials enables your business to engage with customers on WhatsApp without a separate Business Solution Provider (BSP). With this add-on, you get direct access to CleverTap’s WhatsApp BSP, allowing you to send campaigns, trigger journeys, and manage conversations seamlessly within CleverTap.

This add-on is ideal for startups and growing businesses that want a simple setup, transparent pricing, and complete control over message delivery.

Prerequisites

Before enabling the WhatsApp Direct Add-on, check that your business meets the following requirements:

  • A CleverTap Essentials account.
  • Admin access to your organization’s account.

Pricing and Billing

The WhatsApp Direct Add-on is billed at 20% of your base plan fee. The monthly fee will appear in your Chargebee invoice. Additionally, you must buy credits to send messages.

Enable Add-on

The following are the key steps to enable the WhatsApp Direct Add-on feature in your project:

  1. Purchase WhatsApp Direct Add-on
  2. Purchase Credits
  3. Configure WhatsApp Direct Settings

Purchase WhatsApp Direct Add-on

The add-on does not include free credits. Credits must be purchased separately, and this add-on is not enabled without them.

To purchase the WhatsApp Direct Add-on:

  1. Log in as an Admin to your CleverTap account.
  2. Go to Organization > Billing > My Plan > Manage Add-ons.
  3. Locate WhatsApp Direct Add-on in the list.
  4. Click Purchase.
  5. Confirm the purchase.

Purchase Credits

Credits are required to send WhatsApp Direct messages. Credits have no expiry, and they roll over across billing cycles. The invoices for credits are available under Billing > Invoices.

To purchase credits:

  1. Log in as an Admin to your CleverTap account.
  2. Go to Organization > Billing > My Plan > Manage Add-ons.
  3. Click Purchase Credits.
  4. Select the required number of credits.
  5. Click Continue to payment and complete the checkout process.

Configure WhatsApp Direct Settings

Once purchased, you are redirected to Settings > Channels > WhatsApp, where you can configure your WhatsApp channel. For more information, refer to CleverTap WhatsApp.

Using WhatsApp Credits

Keep track of your WhatsApp credit usage to ensure uninterrupted campaign delivery.

Consumption Tracking

Admins can track credit usage by navigating to Billing > My Plan > Details.

The following breakdown is available for credit usage:

  • By Country: Usage across geographies.
  • By Message Category: Utility, Service, Marketing.

Alerts and Notifications

To help you avoid disruptions in your messaging campaigns:

  • Dashboard alerts and email notifications are triggered when your balance falls below a certain threshold.
  • if credits are running low, in-app nudges appear when creating WhatsApp campaigns or journeys.

Campaign Behavior

Understand how your WhatsApp campaigns work based on credit availability:

  • When credits are available: WhatsApp Direct campaigns and journeys run normally.

  • When credits are exhausted:

    • All active WhatsApp Direct campaigns are stopped.
    • New WhatsApp Direct campaigns cannot be created until credits are purchased.
    • Campaigns using WhatsApp Connect (your own BSP) remain unaffected.

FAQs

Q. Do credits expire?

No. Credits remain available until consumed, even if billing cycles change.

Q. What happens if I cancel the add-on while credits remain?

Unused credits will not be refunded. Please check that you consume credits before opting out.

Q. Can non-admin users purchase credits?

No. Only account admins can purchase and manage credits.

Q. Will my campaigns automatically restart after buying credits?

No. Campaigns that stopped due to exhausted credits must be restarted manually.
